Happy Birthday Sherlock Holmes!

Happy Birthday Sherlock Holmes!

It’s truly hard to describe what Sherlock Holmes means to me.  He was (and still is) one of my favorite characters.  Benedict Cumberbatch playing him in the show “Sherlock” is just one serious bonus;)  I started limiting my reading Sherlock Holmes to only once a year so I don’t remember every little detail.  That way I can still enjoy being in the dark with Doctor Watson.  My favorite case has always been “The Speckled Band”.  I’m not sure why.  It was my favorite as a kid so I stand by it now.  I remember picturing every detail in the story so vividly and maybe that’s the reason it’s my favorite:)

I have my new phone “case” (slight pun intended;) from Chick Lit Designs…they also have an etsy shop so give them a look see! I love it, and it couldn’t have arrived on a more perfect day;)

North and South: Elizabeth Gaskell

elizabeth-gaskell

I’m a huge fan of the film but for some crazy reason, I’ve never read the book!  As an Elizabeth Gaskell fan I really should have read it earlier.  So North and South is my first read of the new year and works as a book on both challenges!  It’s the first book in my #10TBR2017 and will totally work for the “Old Book” category in the #ReadALution2017 Challenge.  Two birds with one stone is always a plus:)

Happy reading!

Reading Challenges 2017!

It’s officially 2017, and with a new year comes new challenges and new books!  Both help us grow and see the world in new ways from new perspectives we couldn’t have imagined otherwise.  Combining the two to make a Book Challenge seems like the perfect way to kick off 2017!  I actually came up with two book challenges this year and to keep it real they can intertwine!

Book Challenge #1

First up we have the new #ReadALution2017.   What’s so revolutionary about this challenge?  Instead of being a “monthly read-a-long” the only rule in this quirky and eclectic challenge is to finish by December 31,2017.  Do any category whenever!  Post pictures of what your reading for which category so we can all explore the different books!  I personally can’t wait to see what y’all pick!  Don’t forget to hashtag your pics #ReadALution2017 and Mention @ SouthernBookish so I can see y’alls books!

Book Challenge #2

10 Books TBR 2017 Challenge

1. Grab 10 books off of your shelves, snap a quick pic no over thinking needed.  (Don’t have 10 unread books on your shelves?  Either give yourself a pat on the back or go buy some books! or both;) Pick however many you have unread and go for it.)

2. Post your pic and hashtag #10TBR2017 on whatever social media you use…instagram, blog, periscope about it whatever you use go for it.  (Don’t forget to mention @ SouthernBookish so I can see y’alls challenges!)

3. Read those books!  Post pics when you’re finished or starting the next book…leave comments on how you liked what you read:)  Have fun with this y’all!  You could even keep track on goodreads…whatever floats your boat. We have a whole year so take your time…read other things in between but keep the goal:)

Happy 400 Years Shakespeare!

Happy 400th Birthday Shakespeare!  Thanks for the many laughs, tears, confusing moments and great One Liners;)  I have enjoyed so much Shakespeare.  The original works and other funny versions like Star Wars or Doctor Who.  My favorite play is The Taming of the Shrew.  It’s always been my favorite and always will be:)   I’m not saying it’s his best or his most clever or his most romantic…but it’s my favorite:)

I bought this late 1800s incomplete set of Shakepearian plays at my local used bookstore.  I was very excited to find them but, they were a bit expensive for me at $5 each;/  I picked several out I couldn’t leave behind, and then asked the seller how much if I were to buy all of them and she gave me a deal I couldn’t refuse!  I’m so glad she did…I have enjoyed them quite a bit!  They are full of notes and newspaper clippings and other odd things, all collected by a woman named Emma Sawyer.  I don’t know if this was merely a hobby or what but she REALLY loved Shakespeare!  My favorite find is a Playbill from an Edwin Booth play and a newspaper clipping from Jefferson Davis!
